What is Bonaire known for?

Ah! Bonaire. Every time I pronounce its name I immediately feel like going back to that beautiful Caribbean island. This tiny island is one of its kind as it sits below the Hurricane Belt AND it hasn’t really been spoiled by tourists…yet.

Bonaire not only offers a paradise on earth but it is also prestigious in regards to the weather. You will never be disappointed by the scenery and what’s more, locals are one of a kind! I know you will love this island as much as I do, but be warned, you may want to stay there and enjoy all the greatness forever!

‘’Bo’’…what?, it’s pronounced Bon-Air!

I have met quite a few people who have never heard about Bonaire before, and as soon as I showed them some photographs they wouldn’t even believe that this island is ruled by the Dutch.

‘’How had I not heard about this island before?’’ was the most common answer I received after showing photographs of the island, and truth be told, I once didn’t know about it either. But my fascination towards the world led me to discover this beautiful place and I am willing to share everything I know about it with you.

But Bonaire is not only known for its beautiful weather, did you know that it is also known for its waters? as it is the host of some of the best sceneries in the world, especially if you are into underwater explorations.

Bonaire

Deep in the water

As soon as you step down the plane and start looking around the island you will realize that this Caribbean gem is still unspoiled. This is why many underwater sports lover’s go back each year as they know they will get a perfect setting for practicing their respective outdoors activities.

Water lovers and sports enthusiasts have many options in Bonaire. From scuba diving to snorkeling, to windsurfing and even surf, you will be able to try your best at every sport in the most beautiful beaches on earth.

In addition to all of the stated above, did you know that Bonaire is one of the few National Marine Park in the world? In other words, this island’s waters are protected and even monitored in order to avoid problems.

This also means that there are many corals for you to look at and admire and wildlife is everywhere as well!

What about Klein Bonaire?

Klein Bonaire means ‘’Little Bonaire’’ in Dutch. It is one of the few undiscovered paradises that this island has to offer. You can reach this little island by water taxi. Keep in mind that this is an uninhabited island that has been preserved this way in order to protect Bonaire.

Also, nobody lives in Klein Bonaire. So if you are looking into going you must take everything you will need during the day, this includes food, drinking water, snacks, sunblock, and maybe even a tent as the sun won’t stop shining when you are here!

Take me to the cactus vodka

A cactus vodka? How on earth is that even possible? But truth is, it is possible, and people from Bonaire have discovered how to do it, and of course, how to enjoy it.

Sea salt for the win

If you are looking into buying something from Bonaire, why don’t you get evaporated sea salt? This island is renowned for producing sea salt that has been evaporated by its famous crystal clear seawater in the sun.

Nowadays Bonaire’s sea salt is a very popular souvenir that tourists who visit the island love to get and share with their friends and family back home. There are many shops that have specialized in the benefits that this type of salt has, thus they have created a wide range of cosmetics for you to choose from.

You can also visit Bonaire’s Salt Pyramids. In there you will be able to see this Caribbean island salt industry. In fact, Bonaire is also renowned for having pink-colored areas that are scattered all over the island. This is a phenomenon that occurs when saltwater goes into some sort of pond.

Remember I told you Bonaire has perfect weather all year round? Well, as months go by this sunshine helps to increase the salinity of the brine, thus the sun and the wind of the island help water to be evaporated.

Bonaire does sustainable tourism

This island is recognized for having a sustainable tourism industry. It is fair to say that its government – and the locals alike – have dedicated themselves to preserve nature while also maintaining its culture.

Bonaire participates of a scheme called Coral Restoration Foundation (CRF), and it was one of the first islands to collaborate with this organization to conserve the reefs that are found on the island.

And the island’s commitment to the environment can also be felt inland, as Bonaire has initiatives that will help to reduce the emissions of CO2 and its effects on the planet, thus this makes Bonaire an eco-friendly place to visit.

In addition, the Bonaire National Marine Park is also a protected zone and it basically covers the entire island. This means that at least 300 species of tropical fish and the coral reefs (among many more species) are found and preserved due to the National Park status.

Start planning your holiday to Bonaire

Some people think that Bonaire is not right for them because it seems like a very active place to go to. This is true and it is also a misconception, and I’ll explain why.

This Caribbean island is ideal for divers and snorkelers who are looking forward to getting to know the diversity of what is found under the sea. And this is great! On the other hand, it is also a misconception because people may be put off by these type of activities, especially when they simply want to lay down and enjoy the sun and a tranquil sea.

Either way, Bonaire caters for all types of travelers. One of the reasons for this is the fact that Bonaire is a safe place to travel for tourists.

So if you are thinking about going to Bonaire you definitely should, as it will offer you a terrestrial and marine adventure that you will never forget. You will be able to explore the island’s beautiful surroundings while at the same time you will learn about a culture that is at least 1,000 years old.

You will also be able to meet the Bonairean people, one of the friendliest people on earth. They are very proud of their small island, and you can tell this place is massive in their hearts.

So enjoy this holiday in paradise! And as they say ‘’Once a visitor, always a friend!’’ you will don’t regret going to this Caribbean island.
